Have you ever found yourself in a grump slump or just feeling particularly blah about your day? Try out these 3 simple mood boosters that will instantly boost your spirits no matter what!
There have been several studies linking smiling to being one of the most potent mood boosters. Don’t believe me? Try a Google search right now; you’ll be amazed at how much just a little action can revolutionize your day. Psychology Today even claims that
“Your smile is a powerful tool. Most people think that we smile because we feel happy, but it can go the other way as well: we feel happy because we smile.”
When you crack a smile, even when you aren’t happy, your body tricks your brain into thinking that there is something to be happy about. This lets your brain release the ‘feel good’ chemicals that boost your mood instantly! The benefits don’t even stop there. Putting on a small grin can keep your mood boosted up towards 4 minutes later!
So, show those pearly whites as often as you can, and you will always be able to come out of a slump as soon as you do! I suggest keeping a silly picture at your desk or on your phone that you can glance at whenever you need a mood booster.
2. Stretch it Out
Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, anxious, or just in a bad mood that your muscles tense up? Many of us tend to hunch our shoulders and lower our heads, but just makes our mood worse. One quick and easy thing you can do is raise your hands over your head and give yourself a good 30 second stretch. You’ll be amazed at how your body instantly responds.
There are plenty of articles out there that discuss the correlation between stretching exercises and getting a mood boost. We see most of these discussions when it comes to the benefits of yoga, but I’ve personally felt my own endorphin boost by merely taking a few seconds to stretch my back and neck at my desk.
3. Sit Outside
Many of you may have noticed that when you spend some time outside, you automatically feel better. Environmental Science & Technology magazine published an article in their physical magazine that claimed
“Nature is almost foolproof at boosting your mood and self-esteem. And, amazingly, it only takes five minutes.”
The key to this is natural light! Natural light instantly gets to work as one of the most potent mood boosters ever. It only takes 5 minutes of sitting outside to get a mood booster; staying outside even longer will have even more long-lasting effects!
Sometimes this can be difficult. For example, I’m a teacher in a room that has no windows. The only time I can enjoy natural light is every 50 minutes when classes get out, and I go stand in the main hallway. Perhaps you have a similar situation in which you work in an office building, away from windows.
My fix for this is to use these daylight light bulbs in a few lamps around my room that I use to supplement natural light. It’s not 100% as effective as actual natural light, but I always feel much better when I’ve been working around these lightbulbs opposed to the standard fluorescent bulbs found in most workplace settings.
There are so many other ways that you can boost your mood, but I find that these three things always instantly act as mood boosters for me. I’m talking 100% of the time, one of these never fails to boost my mood!
