I can’t tell you how many times I’ve glanced over a magazine that reads: STYLE RULES, YOUR GUIDE TO STYLE, or similarly named articles. Honestly, it makes me a little sad.
I don’t think that style should be something that other people tell you to wear. I also don’t think that there need to be any rules, either. Like, who else ignores the ever mentioned, “Don’t wear white after Labor Day” rule? I can’t be the only one. Why does it matter if I wear white after a holiday? No one ever told me. (But seriously, if there is a reason, comment down below so I know about it!)
I remember being acutely offended when I was a teenager when I wore my favorite white dress shoes to an outing. I was minding my own business, enjoying my family’s company, and this older woman came up to me making the tsk tsk sound. She pointed at my shoes and said in the most disproving way, “Don’t you know you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day? Disgraceful!” Uh…excuse me?! Who made her the fashion police? And why did she feel the need to embarrass a teenager?
It’s the same with other arbitrary rules like “Don’t mix patterns,” or “Never wear black and brown together!” Honestly, if I make an outfit with two, three, ten different patterns, and I think it looks good, I’m going to wear it. The same with colors! Who makes up these rules and why do people think that it is imperative to our well-being to follow them?
Style is all about wearing what makes you feel good! Wear what makes you feel pretty! Wear what makes you feel good about yourself! And if your style breaks the rules, BREAK THE RULES!
Life is far too short to worry about if your shoes go against some rule that no one knows anything about.
Style is all about rocking clothing that makes you feel confident in yourself. So what if your style is unconventional and you just want to wear beautiful Gothic lolita dresses, or 1920s skirts and hats, or shoes that look like they could double as a weapon? Wear them, and wear them with pride! And trust me, when people see you rockin’ clothing that is out of the box with your head held high and an I-don’t-care-what-you-think-about-my-style attitude, they will give you crazy respect. Many will probably hold you in awe as the queen or king of style and take your queue to adventure out on their own style adventure just because they saw you confident in yours. And you know what?
You deserve it!
So, go on and rock those white shoes after Labor Day, your outfit of many prints, your brown shoes and black pants, your 7 inch stiletto heels! Show the world that you are unstoppable and unafraid!
Make your style yours, and you can conquer the world!
