Isn’t it just the worst thing ever when you spend your time doing your makeup, but as soon as you get out in the heat, it just melts off of your face? It’s so frustrating, I know. Want the secrets to melt-proof summer makeup? Keep on reading!
Ok, the biggest way to have melt-proof summer makeup is beginning at the, well, foundation. If your foundation isn’t melt-proof, nothing you put on your face will be safe from the heat – trust me on that one.
Instead of grabbing your regular full/medium coverage heavy foundation, invest in a lightweight BB cream or tinted moisturizer. And, seriously, lightweight doesn’t have to mean sheer/light coverage. I’m meaning lightweight as in it won’t sit heavily on the skin, clog your pores, and slide everywhere when you step outside.
There are actually quite a few nice options for melt-proof summer makeup BB creams / tinted moisturizers.
If you are looking for a more light / medium coverage, try out the Maybelline Dream Pure BB (it’s designed to help get rid of blemishes!) or the Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20. If you want a more medium / full coverage, look into the Estee Lauder DayWear Anti-Oxidant BB Crème SPF 35. I have heard many good things about the three of these. Of course, there are so many more option than just these three. If you found one that you love, feel free to stick with it (and mention it in the comments below)!
Also, there is a new, hot trend in summer makeup – the compact ‘cushion’ makeup. They are like a BB cream / tinted moisturizer had a baby with regular foundation. They are essentially a small compact with a super absorbent sponge in them soaked in a vamped up formula of foundation with high SPF and a cloud-like spongy applicator. I’ve seen this trend come to height in Korean beauty circles, and now they are finally being picked up by Western companies (L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion, anyone?) And now, PopSugar is predicting that this trend will blow up over the summer! Check them out if you want buildable, lightweight coverage.
Not a big fan of wearing lightweight products and would rather keep your grip on traditional foundation foundation? I have you covered there, too. Last summer, I went through a phase of wearing nothing but full coverage foundation – even in the hottest heat. Two products that I used regularly are on opposite ends of the price spectrum, but both held up in the South Texas heat.
The two best melt-proof summer makeup foundations that I found are the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro Matte Foundation and the MAC Pro Longwear Foundation. I could walk outside in the heat for 15-30 minutes, and the L’Oréal foundation would last 6-8 hours, but I would have to blot and/or reapply oil absorbing powder. If I were out longer than that, though, it would begin to slip and slide over my face and I would have to run to the bathroom, pat off the travelling foundation and reapply. However, once I put the MAC Pro Longwear on, it did not budge until I removed it that night with makeup remover – for real.
You could also just forgo wearing foundation all together and apply a tinted face powder with SPF. Some good options here are BareMinerals and Pur Cosmetics. I also really enjoyed the Almay Smart Shade Skintone Matching Pressed Powder. Though, even though a powder may have SPF, it’s always a good idea to wear sunscreen underneath for extra protection.
The whole trick to melt-proof summer makeup is making sure that your skin can breathe through your coverage so it doesn’t try harder to cool itself down. BB creams and tinted moisturizers are really good at letting your skin breathe while providing some coverage, but cushion foundations, regular foundation, or even powder can be effective for you depending on what you like and what works for you.
Cheek / Lip Stain
Oaky, okay, I know some of you read that and went, “Huh?” The concept is still a little odd to me, too, but this particular product is very good during the hot and humid Texas summer heat. Who loves the look of runs through your blush when you sweat? No one. And, in my experience, when you sweat, it’s way more noticeable when you wear powder blush than face powder. I think it is because it is an extra layer, therefore, it is not ‘anchored’ in place. The solution to the problem? Cheek / lip stain.
The only problem with this product is that, if you want to just walk into a cosmetics store, they are usually kind of pricey (as are most duo / new concept products). But I got you covered!
If you are willing to drop a pretty penny on a well reputed cheek / lip stain, totally grab the Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Cheek & Lip Stain. I’ve tried it, and it works wonderfully without budging!
Don’t want to spend a lot on a product that you aren’t sure will work? You can pick up an e. l. f. Lip stain for $2 that will do the same thing for similar results (just be sure you blend the color onto your cheeks really quickly and really well, or you will wind up looking like someone drew on your face in marker. You could always dab it on with a beauty sponge, of course – that’s the safer route).
Still skeptical on a combo product for cheeks and lips, or not sure you want to put a liquid stain on your cheeks? That’s fine, too. Just grab a separate liquid stain for your lips and a liquid blush for your cheeks.
Either way, liquid blush or stain is the way to go for your melt-proof summer makeup for a nice flush of color that won’t sweat off. And lip stains are ideal for the lips because it won’t smear around in the heat. (And who wants to apply thick lipstick or gloss when it’s hot outside? I don’t!)
Ok, this is where things can get tricky. Because the mere act of blinking when it’s not hot outside can cause eyeshadow to crease and eye liner to smear, it seems like these products just cannot stand up to the heat. Wrong! They can, but you have to find the right formula.
If you want a pop of color on your lids and don’t want to worry about the heat and blinking to smear it everywhere, opt for a liquid or cream eye shadow. My absolute go-to for this is the Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo line. You pat that stuff on your eye lid, and it won’t go anywhere without makeup remover! I’ve seen so many bloggers and YouTubers compare this to the expensive MAC Paint Pot that I’m not even going to link you the expensive stuff because this works like magic in the heat! Seriously, I’m telling you right now to go grab a couple of these. You won’t be disappointed at all! I kid you not, this is my holy grail product when the Texas summer is at its worst.
Eyeliner on the other hand is more of a challenge. Depending on the formula, how thick you like your line, and the shape of your eye lid (hooded or not), you will get different results than your peers. Don’t worry though, with some trial and error, I’m sure we will all find the perfect melt-proof eyeliner!
Begin looking for a combo of waterproof and smudge proof liner. I’ve had good results with both the Rimel London ScandalEyes Gel Liner in a pot and the Revlon Colorstay Crème Gel Eye Liner. Both were a little smudged by the end of the day, but they held up really well against the heat.
But let me tell you about an eye liner with so much staying power, it would not come off until I took it off with an oil cleanser. I’m talking about the Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Push-Up Eye Liner. It’s a little pricey, but once you put this on and let it set for a moment, it will not come off. It also comes in a mini size for a smaller price if you aren’t sure if you would like an indestructible eye liner.
When I had my makeup done for my wedding, this is what my makeup artist used on me. I spent more time trying to take this eye liner off than trying to get out of my entire wedding get up by myself! That’s everything from the Spanx to the bustier to the actual dress that was covered in buttons and zippers. Think about that for a moment. This eye liner is the queen of staying power.
And, when it comes to mascara, I found that most mascaras are not affected by the heat unless you rub your eyes and make it smudge . If this is a problem for you, though, feel free to grab the waterproof version of your favorite mascara, and you’ll be good to go!
And there you go! Some tips and trick for having melt-proof summer makeup. Always be sure that you protect your skin above all else, though! You can get the most melt-proof makeup in the world, but if you aren’t protecting your skin from the sun, then it’s not doing you any good! Trust me, you don’t want to wake up one day to see that you now have sun spots, wrinkles, or even cancerous growths because you neglected to protect yourself from the sun.
