Massage Therapy is one of the most debated forms of stress relief out there, but don’t let the constant debate scare you away form a potentially amazing relief for any ailment you may have. Let me take you through my own massage therapy experiences to give you an idea of what massage therapy has done for me.
Many studies have shown that massage therapy can reduce a plethora of ailments, including but not limited to:
- digestive issues
- sport injuries
- joint pain
However, many people don’t believe in the wonderful effects of massage therapy because there is not all that much research connecting massage therapy to the management of stress and the potential remedy of many common health concerns. However, more research is on the rise, and it mostly points to the wonderful benefits of massage therapy!
The problem that lies, therein, is that many people prefer to hear and try new things via word or mouth or from a trusted friend. Why? Possibly because of the backfire of research linking medicines to health problems that wound up being disproven. Sure, people use the research, but I think there is a common concern that the research may be proven false. So, to combat relying on reading scientific research, most people tend to build opinions and try new things from people who have seen and felt a difference.
That’s where I come in! I’m going to give you the lowdown on my massage therapy experiences.
Why Do I Use Massage Therapy?
Most of you know how crazy and hectic recent events have been in my life. This entire past year has probably aged me, my husband, brother, and parents much more than we care to admit.
I’m talking (for me, at least) about lack of sleep, anxiety, severe muscle tension resulting in constant headaches and spasms, digestive issues, the formation of new allergies, facial breakouts – you get the picture.
So much stress had built up in my body for so long that I honestly couldn’t tell you what it felt like to not be stressed – that is, until I got my first taste of massage therapy.
What Kind of Massage Therapy Do I Get?
My monthly haunt is Massage Envy for their wonderful service, understanding, and genuine concern for me as an individual. I have yet to go through all 20+ therapists that they have, but I definitely have figured out what works for me and what I need for the massage therapy to work.
I get a full body massage with medium, firm pressure. And, let me tell you, it is wonderful.
I found out that I tend to carry my stress in the upper back area in my trapezius muscles, so I request that my therapists focus on this area more than they would on a generic massage. The stress I carry there results in large knots in the muscle tissue that cause pain, tension, and make my back just hurt like crazy – as in, it can hurt so much at times I thought that I had either cracked my scapula or had torn my rotator cuff (and had x-rays and MRIs done!).
This was the main reason that I decided to start getting massage therapy, but the massage therapy has helped out with far more than just muscle pain!
The Effects of My Massage Therapy Sessions
- The pain and tension from my stress-induced muscle knots literally disappeared and did not come back until end-of-semester/finals stress set in nearly a month later. That’s right – three weeks of relief from just 1 massage therapy appointment! Now, the pain from the knots (that are gradually getting smaller, by the way) can be kept at bay by regular massage therapy. Also, the muscle spasms that used to wake me from my sleep or hit suddenly during the day (hello, Charlie Horse!) have stopped!
- I am able to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer! I used to have a bad problem of constantly waking up in the middle of the night for no reason. I used to attribute this to being a light sleeper, but after the deep sleep I’ve been getting, I don’t think I was ever a light sleeper! I think I was just not able to sleep properly enough because of my stress.
- My stomach problems are far less severe than they have been in years. This benefit was a complete surprise for me! I am assuming it’s because most of my problems were caused by stress, and now that I have an amazing weapon to keep stress at bay, my stomach can finally rest easy.
- I’ve noticed a definite slack in how often I get headaches and the severity of them. I’ll still get them because of allergies, but the stress headaches don’t come as often. If that’s not a win, I don’t know what is! (I detest headaches!!!)
Massage Therapy has helped me in ways I didn’t even know it could. I first went thinking that it would be a temporary relief for the weekend and just wanted the experience of having a nice massage while I had a need for one.
I absolutely, 100% recommend that every single one of you try out massage therapy. The results of even a single massage might surprise you!
The results surprised and pleased me so much, I actually became a Massage Envy Member and signed up for monthly massages!
I hope you guys enjoyed this post; massage therapy has been one of the things that I look forward to the most because of how relaxed and empowered I feel after each session. I figured that if it did me this much good, I could do that much good for you! Thanks for reading!
This was not a sponsored post! Massage Envy did not ask me to write this in any way – they don’t even know I wrote it!
